EEA Joins Thousands for Third Annual International Green Apple Day of Service

Austin, Texas, September 30, 2014 – EEA Consulting Engineers is pleased to announce that on September 27, nine employees and friends came together at Brooke Elementary School in east Austin with volunteers from the school community and Americorps for a community garden expansion and clean up. This event was part of a larger global movement, the Green Apple Day of Service, an initiative from the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council that brings together advocates from around the world and encourages them to take action in their communities through service projects at local schools. The Day of Service, now in its third year, provides an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more to transform all schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places.

The EEA volunteers built seven additional 3’x5′ garden beds and assisted with laying concrete and erecting signage around the school. A digital signage for schools was perhaps a better idea, which we hope the administration might consider soon. Additional projects included construction of a rock and gravel path to the school’s chicken coop, laying mulch around the chicken coop for the chickens to scratch, erecting fencing around air conditioning units in the chicken yard, building a pergola in the garden, and general garden clean up.  EEA purchased concrete and additional shovels for the school to use on these projects and going forward.

“At the Center for Green Schools we’re always astounded by the ingenuity and innovation of communities across the country and around the world during the Day of Service,” said Rachel Gutter, director of the Center for Green Schools at USGBC. “In these challenging economic times, schools, communities and leaders have demonstrated an impressive commitment to make the places where our children learn sustainable and safe, while putting money back into the classrooms where it belongs. We commend our volunteers for transforming our schools and transforming our communities.”

Last year, over 2,100 volunteer projects took place around the world as communities participated in the second annual Green Apple Day of Service, generating school improvement projects worldwide.

Many of today’s schools are beset by a host of challenges that compromise our children’s health and wellness, causing everything from asthma to headaches and concentration issues. The Green Apple Day of Service is helping transform schools into sustainable and healthy places to live, learn, work and play while educating a new generation of consumers and leaders –sustainability natives – capable of driving global market transformation.
