Bringing in the Right Team
With Texas State University’s commitment to Sustainable Stewardship came a recognition that the campus needed to take steps to reduce building energy consumption. But how do you tackle such a prospect when your campus houses 266 buildings totaling over 7.6 million square feet? Knowing they needed an experienced energy efficiency expert to help them Texas State contracted with EEA through the TxMAS program to help them with a campus-wide energy audit. EEA and The University worked together to identify 62 buildings totaling 5.7 million square feet to receive an base level energy audit and utility rate analysis.
A Path to Energy Efficiency
EEA staff spent several weeks on campus walking through the facilities to identify potential energy conservation measures. Opportunities to conserve energy and water included building lighting replacement and controls, conversion of constant volume HVAC systems to variable volume, building automation system upgrades, and plumbing fixture retrofits. The audit resulted in recommendations for an estimated $3.6 million of energy conservation projects with a calculated annual energy savings of $870,000 in utility costs (4.1 year simple payback).
A video case study of this project was prepared as part of EEA’s recognition as an MEP Giant by Consulting-Specifying Engineer Magazine.
