Austin, Texas – November 10, 2014 – For the second year running, EEA Consulting Engineers participated in the local CANstruction® event held Saturday, November 8, at Barton Creek Square Mall.
CANstruction is a nonprofit which hosts competitions, exhibitions and events around the United States showcasing structures made entirely out of full cans of food. After the structures are built, the cansculptures® go on display to the public as a giant art exhibition. At the end of the event, all food is donated to local food banks, such as the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. Online voting is now open for the People’s Choice Award which will be announced at the end of the event.
EEA partnered with five other firms including DCI Engineers, dwg. Urban Landscape Architecture, GSC Architects, Hoar Construction, and Kimley-Horn to build Emmet the Lego man from the recent animated film The Lego Movie. The team’s tag line summarizes Emmet’s purpose in CANstruction: “Everyone’s favorite Lego mini-figure, Emmet, is on a mission to end hunger in Austin one can at a time. Hunger is not awesome, but we can help when we are part of a team. Just like in the movie, you don’t need to be a superhero to save the world. While the team’s design is fun and light-hearted, they want to bring awareness to the city’s hungriest people – children.” DCI Engineers created a short video documenting the event and the build of Emmet at the mall.
EEA is honored to battle hunger alongside the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. “CANstruction is an event that directly benefits communities of Central Texas. Our team at EEA was excited not only to be involved with CANstruction again, but to contribute a sculpture that everyone–especially children–could recognize and enjoy,” says Kirby Dunagan, EEA’s CANstruction coordinator. All food used in the sculptures is donated to the food bank to help feed central Texans. According to the food bank, CANstruction has raised over 150,000 meals over the past five years.
